A “Frame of Mind” & Inspirations

steve

You might remember singer/songwriter Steve Archdeacon from the post titled “Make This Moment Your Moment!” He has recently released a new song titled “Frame of Mind.”  You can enjoy his song below:

Steve and I had a chance to sit down and reflect on where he has been on life’s journey, see how he’s doing today and learn about his frame of mind.

Joshua A.: What inspired you to become a musician?

Steve: Well, I’d have to say the one band that really got me interested and inspired to play music in high school was Pink Floyd! I’ve never wanted to just have a 9-5 job, as I’ve always wanted to forge my own path and live life on my terms. One day, when I was in high school, I was driving in the car with my friend and I said to her, “Ya know what? I think I finally figured out what I wanna do with my life.” She said, “What’s that?” I simply said, “I wanna play the guitar for the rest of my life.” Music really is the universal language and I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else with my life, as I truly love what I do!

Joshua A.: What challenges and obstacles have helped shape who you are today?

Steve: I’d have to say the biggest challenge I’ve had to overcome was my father’s passing on February 15th, 2008. Unfortunately, I was the one who found him, which isn’t easy to deal with at times, but the best and healthiest way I deal with it is through my music. After he passed, I was devastated–and I pretty much still am to this day–but, it’s something you learn to live with and deal with on a daily basis. It’s not something you get over, as anyone that has lost a parent can attest to. But, I’ve always been the type of person to face my challenges head on no matter what they were, and this is no different.

After my father passed I basically went tunnel-vision into music. Let’s put it this way: the year before my father passed I made about $500 for the year in music, and the year after he passed I made $7,700 for the year. I’ve always tried to do what Michael Jordan says he did, and that is to always turn a negative into a positive in life. One of my favorite quotes of all time that comes to mind about overcoming obstacles in life, which has helped me over the years, is this:

“Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life, as by the obstacles which he has overcome while trying to succeed.” [Booker T. Washington]

Joshua A.: For those that are motivated to pursue their musical dreams what is your advice?

Steve: My grandfather told me years ago before he died–as I asked him how he succeeded in the construction business with only a high school education–and, he said to me to seek out the people that already have what you want, and to apply what they have done to succeed in your own life. I’ve studied anyone from Michael Jordan to Bruce Lee. Tony Robbins–Tony Robbins is one of my biggest influences and I’m going to see him at one of his live events in New Jersey in a few months; it’s something I’ve been wanting to do for about 17 years now. And, Wayne Dyer among many other people.

Also, go to Music Conferences, network. And, most of all, instead of asking yourself how can this person or that person help me get to the next level–which most people do–ask yourself: “How can I help that person get to the next level?” That way, when they succeed because of your help, then they will be much more willing to help you in your career too! Another thing is to read books on the music industry and if you’re a songwriter then read books about songwriting. We have to continually feed our minds and focus on what we want. One of the best investments I made in my music career was going to the TAXI Music Conference over the years, as I’ve gained more knowledge about music and the music industry over the six years I’ve attended the Conference than in the other 31 years I’ve been alive.

I do have a “Music Tips” section on my new website. If you want to read some more tips, just visit: www.archdeaconmusic.com/music-tips.

Joshua A.: Tell us about your new album and the song “Frame of Mind.”

Steve: My new song, entitled “Frame of Mind,” is also the name of my next album, as I think everything in life is about creating the right frame of mind or state of mind, so we can live a happy and fulfilled life no matter what we are doing. I recorded the song before going to L.A. for a music conference, in the beginning of November, 2014, and to me the song and album title is very fitting for me, because it encapsulates a lot of what I’ve learned over the years into one song. Here is a video of me playing it live in L.A. at the TAXI Music Conference:

I believe that everyone can relate to this song and it’s also a more upbeat song that also shows what I can do with my live looping too! If you’re not familiar with what looping is, it is the ability to record the guitar and/or vocals and play them back live. I just recently made an Acoustic Duo “Live Looping” Promo Video with Sean Dolan on drum/vocals.  Sean is a Juilliard graduate and is one of the most talented musicians I’ve had the pleasure of playing with over the years. Everything I do is live looping as nothing is pre-recorded. Performing as an acoustic duo with Sean makes it fun. Check out the video below to see our new 3 minute Acoustic Duo looping demo:

Joshua A.: What are some exciting experiences you’ve had so far?

Steve: I’ve had a lot over the years, but I’d say my Top Six would have to be:

  1. steve 3Recording and releasing my album No Turning Back, which is dedicated to my dad. That album means more to me than anything I’ve ever done in my life to this day!
  2. Going on tour to England for seven weeks in the summer of 2000 and playing at the Cavern, where the Beatles became famous.
  3. Playing in the Veterans Day Parade in N.Y.C. with the Wounded Warrior Project three years in a row (2011-2013).
  4. Playing at Sunken Meadow Park (Kings Park, NY) with my good friend Sean Dolan (drums/vocals) and seeing a lady actually get out of her wheelchair and start to dance. I found out after we took a break that she hadn’t gotten out of her wheelchair in over two years and her caretaker was almost in tears telling me that. That’s the power of music and why I love to play and perform. To spread joy and love through music is the best gift I could have possibly asked for.
  5. Performing at the Boulton Center in Bayshore, NY with my good friend Sean Dolan (drums/vocals/Juilliard graduate), as the last time I was there before playing there I saw Eric Johnson, who is one of the greatest guitarists of this generation, perform there. It was also a benefit to raise money to battle hunger, as it’s always a good thing to be able to use your musical ability to help others in need.
  6. Getting a picture placed on the front cover of the Indie Bible 9th, 12th, 13th, 14th, and 15th editions, which is a 300-plus page publication that comes out once a year designed to help independent musicians.

Joshua A.: Are you going to be out on tour?

Steve: I’m always performing as I’ve played over 60 shows this year already, which is probably the most shows I’ve ever played in one year. I mean, I’ve toured anywhere from England, to L.A., North Carolina, Vermont, Tennessee, Delaware, among other places; but, it’s been a while since I’ve really gone on a proper tour. That might be something to seriously consider doing again especially after recording my next album, Frame of Mind.

Joshua A.: Who are you biggest influences in music and in life?

Steve: I’d have to say Pink Floyd (David Gilmore is awesome), Dave Matthews, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Joe Satriani, and John Mayer would be the main influences of my music. The best way I describe my original music is: a mix between Dave Matthews meets Clapton and Hendrix. Here is a video of me playing a cover of “Belief” by John Mayer:

As for my biggest influences in my life I’d have to say both my mom and my dad, and my old basketball coach who also passed away a couple years after my father passed, Stan Kellner. My parents have always been there for me and have taught me to always be honest, be loyal, loving, and most importantly to give to others. My old basketball coach Stan Kellner taught me with my dad for three straight years and I not only learned about the game of basketball, but more importantly about the game of life. Stan was one of the smartest men I knew, and he even taught Mitch Kupchak into the NBA as he played and won a championship with Magic Johnson and the L.A. Lakers. He is currently the General Manager of the Lakers, and has been for the past 10 years. Stan spoke at my father’s wake and I just remember him saying, “Don was my hero.” That totally blew me away; and all the things my parents and Stan taught me over the years I use every day of my life!

Joshua A.: What’s next for Steve?

Steve: Well, last month I went to L.A. for the TAXI Music Conference and I recorded my new song “Frame of Mind” before going out there and got a great response from everyone who heard it. When I came back I totally redesigned my music website, and it has everything I want to have in a website, plus I have full control of editing the content, which is very important! I’m also going to record four multiple-camera shoots in my apartment: two solo acoustic looping and two acoustic duo looping songs with Sean Dolan, so people can really get an idea of how we sound live and what we are doing with the live looping.

After that, I will be doing a Kickstarter campaign, which is basically a fan funding platform in order to raise money to record my next album. Then, after I raise the money to record, the real work begins to actually create the album and to fulfill my end of the bargain in whatever packages people choose in order to support my music. I haven’t launched the campaign yet, but I will in a few months. If you’d like to contribute and be a part of helping me make my next album through Kickstarter just visit my website and sign up for my mailing list, so I can keep you updated. Also, here is the website I will be doing the campaign. Just type in “Steven Archdeacon” into the search bar and check back periodically.

Joshua A.: Where can people go to purchase your music and learn about your upcoming shows?

I would like to introduce you to Craig Wynne.  He is a writing coach who specializes in helping young adults overcome writer’s block and writing anxiety and has written fantastic articles related to the subject.  Enjoy what he has to say!

What are writing anxiety and writer’s block?

by Dr. Craig Wynne

There are many definitions for these terms, but in its simplest form, writing anxiety consists of the negative feelings that writers have when they attempt to produce ideas and words.  These feelings can prevent them from being successful in their writing.

What causes “Writing Anxiety?”

New Craig picture!

Any number of factors can contribute to writing anxiety.  Studies have shown that, for the most part, writing anxiety is based on situational factors.  You could feel completely at ease writing a text message to your best friend or delivering a Facebook posting, but you might feel completely lost as to how to write a cover letter for that dream job.

Here are some situations that can cause writing anxiety:

  1. Adapting to a new style of writing  or a form of writing you’re not used to (a senior thesis, a cover letter, a memo, etc.)
  2. Writing for a tough audience (i.e., a professor who’s been highly critical of your work, the CEO of that company you really want to work for)
  3. Thinking about criticism you’ve received in the past (even if the person who has criticized you isn’t the audience for your writing)
  4. Tight deadlines (See “Strategies for Managing” on how to deal with those)

Strategies for Managing

  1. Ask for help. Writing doesn’t have to be a solitary act.  A career counselor can help you with a cover letter, for example.  A counselor hasn’t had his/her nose as close to the problem as you have.  An objective opinion might be able to steer you in the right direction. You can also ask your roommate, your RA, your neighbor, or even your mother!  You’ll be surprised at what an outsider’s eye can do.
  2. Avoid perfectionism.  You’ll never get your writing perfect on the first try.  Professional writers can take years to put something together.  A good method is to use the writing process: focus on the ideas first, and then move into organization and grammar.  If you’re stuck for ideas, try one of these prewriting strategies.
  3. Use time management strategies.  In other words, don’t wait until the last minute to complete your writing: this alone can create unneeded stress, no matter who your audience is.  Depending on when your piece is die, give yourself 45 minutes to an hour each day to work on it, step by step.  Give yourself a goal for each day (“Today, I’m going to construct my objective statement.” “Today, I’m going to proofread.”).    Little by little, you’ll see your piece come together, and it won’t seem like such a big climb.
  4.  If you’re getting really stressed out, stop.  You’re not going to be able to write well if you’re feeling tense.  Take a breather from it.  Go for a walk.  Eat something.  Go on Facebook for a few minutes.  Just take some time to clear your head.  When you come back, you’ll be able to approach the assignment with fresh eyes.
  5. Keep a positive frame of mind.  Even if you absolutely hate writing, keep those negative feelings at bay.  If you can think of it as an adventure with a goal in mind, it won’t seem so daunting.  You may even enjoy it!
  6. Reward yourself.  Once you’ve handed your paper in, celebrate.  Go to a movie.  Hang out with friends.  You’ve worked hard; you deserve it!

The final thing to keep in mind is that nearly everyone (even the best of writers) gets apprehensive about writing.  However, if you follow the suggestions listed above, you may be able to relieve a great deal of the pressure.  Even if you don’t get the job or find you’ve made a mistake, don’t let the disappointment defeat you.  Mistakes are a natural part of learning.  It’s what you do next time that counts, so keep a positive frame of mind, and you may be pleasantly surprised with the results!
